Champ Beverages moved from Saint Mary's Ave in Rosebank to Hylan Boulevard in Grant City in 1974. Al Somma was the owner and felt a better retail location was necessary due to the drop off of home deliveries, from increasing soda costs, during the increasing sugar price crisis. It was a bold move that has lead to “Champs” being in there current location for over 40 years.
In 1982, Ed Spall started working for Al Somma. Ed also was dating Al's daughter Marcelle, later marrying her in December of 1989. Al retired in 1994 and Ed and Marcelle bought the business. You can still see Al, time to time, when Ed and Marcelle are on vacation... everybody loves Al!
Champs has always been a neighborhood type-of-place. Rocky Paccione lived across the street and came over, everyday, to hang out and “get the coffee." Rocky sadly passed in December of 1999, but his son in law, Louie, soon retired and is now our local buster, filling in for Rocky. We believe in family, God and country at Champs -- always have and always will!
Besides our retail center, we have many wholesale accountants that we deliver to. Service is our only customer. We're a full compliment of foreign and domestic beers priced at discount prices. We also have an aisle with various new age beverages, keeping up to date with all the new styles of beverages being produced. If we can get it, we will get it for you. We don’t know it all, we just know the MOST!
